Art & Gardens of the Caribbean: Antigua to Barbados Aboard Sea Cloud

Balmy breezes and centuries-old gardening traditions make the Caribbean a delightful winter interlude. Aboard the historic sailing ship Sea Cloud, explore lush gardens, sail in waters with rich maritime history, step ashore at lesser-known ports of call, and experience Caribbean culture and culinary delights. From Antigua cruise to St. Kitts to visit the lovely Romney Manor, then sail to Nevis, the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. Step ashore at Iles des Saintes, site of the most significant naval battle ever fought in the Caribbean between the British and the French. On Grenada, the “Spice Island,” visit a working fruit and spice plantation in the company of the owner. Enjoy the white-sand beaches of lesser-known Carriacou before arriving on St. Vincent to discover two remarkable gardens.

Ship Information

With her rich mahogany and gleaming brass, the legendary Sea Cloud travels under 30 billowing sails trimmed by hand. Her original owners, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier E. F. Hutton, desired a craft like no other. They spared no expense to create the largest private sailing ship ever built and in 1931, Sea Cloud was launched. In the ’30s and ’40s, as she sailed the world, the four-masted beauty was host to leaders including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Sweden’s King Gustavus V. Now carefully restored by a team of master craftspeople, this great lady continues to offer elegant quarters, fine dining, and impeccable service. Praised by the world’s most discerning travelers, Sea Cloud receives consistently high rankings from Condé Nast Traveler.
