Egypt & the Nile – A Journey into Antiquity

Picture yourself spending New Year’s on the timeless Nile!

Even if you have been to Egypt before, this program will present the country in a new light. We begin in Giza with two nights at the majestic Mena House, where Agatha Christie stayed. Tour the nearby pyramids and see the paws of the Sphinx up close on an exclusive visit. Fly to Luxor for a tw o-night stay at the Sofitel Winter Palace, host to Lord Carnarvon while he was funding Howard Carter’s astonishing discoveries. Marvel at the timelessly elegant design of the temple of Hatshepsut, first female pharaoh, and ring in the New Year in a very old place. Then board the intimate Luxury Nile Adventurer for a leisurely cruise. Step ashore at temples devoted to Sobek, revered and feared crocodile-god of fertility; and Horus, falcon-headed god of war. In remote Abu Simbel, marvel at the colossal temples of Ramses II and his favorite wife, Nefertari, then fly to Cairo to experience the treasures of Tutankhamun and other priceless artifacts in the Antiquities Museum.

Travelers on this program will enjoy the congenial company of members of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia. Accompanying us are two amazing lecturers—Isabel Stünkel, who is Associate Curator in the Department of Egyptian Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Norm Olsen, a former Senior U.S. Foreign Service Officer.
