Hamilton’s Caribbean Round-trip Barbados Aboard Sea Cloud II

The smash Broadway hit Hamilton gave many Americans a surprising lesson in the early history of their country: Alexander Hamilton, one of our most influential Founding Fathers, was born in the British West Indies. Uncover the forgotten connections between the Caribbean and 18th-century America on a winter voyage aboard the tall ship Sea Cloud II. Embark in Barbados for a seven-night voyage. Visit the house where Hamilton was born on Nevis and on St. Kitts, discover UNESCO-listed Brimstone Hill, site of a decisive battle in the Caribbean theater of the American Revolution. Take an architectural walking tour on the Dutch island of St. Eustatius and enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or shopping on chic St. Barthélemy, with its French savoir faire and exquisite white-sand beaches. On Iles des Saintes learn about the 1782 conflict that took place here between the British and the French, then cruise to St. Lucia for a soak in mineral-rich mud baths or a walk in Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens, whose exotic vegetation is fed by bubbling hot springs.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 26: DAY AT SEA

Enjoy a day at sea as Sea Cloud II takes full advantage of the trade winds. Tonight the captain hosts us for welcome cocktails, followed by dinner. B,L,R,D

SATURDAY, JANUARY 27: CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS

Our first port of call is the island of Nevis, birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. Visit his childhood home, now the Nevis House of Assembly and a history museum, before exploring the island’s spectacular botanic garden. This five-acre property contains orchid terraces, various tropical plants, and a rainforest conservancy. B,L,D

SUNDAY, JANUARY 28: BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS / ORANJESTAD, ST. EUSTATIUS

On St. Kitts, the first permanent English settlement in the Caribbean, visit imposing Brimstone Hill. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known as “the Gibraltar of the West Indies” for its extensive battery. Discover the gardens of Romney Manor, an 18th-century plantation house formerly owned by a direct ancestor of Thomas Jefferson. After lunch aboard Sea Cloud II, arrive at the small Dutch island of St. Eustatius, once one of the busiest seaports in the world. Take an architectural walking tour through the town, followed by time at leisure. You may choose to join an optional excursion or explore this charming island on your own. B,L,D

MONDAY, JANUARY 29: GUSTAVIA, ST. BARTHELEMY

This morning arrive in small, cosmopolitan St. Barthélemy. Experience the island’s French savoir faire as we stroll past stylish cafés and boutiques. TUESDAY, JANUARY 30: ILES DES SAINTES / GUADELOUPE

The Iles des Saintes is an archipelago of eight tiny volcanic islands and site of the 1782 Battle of the Saintes between the British Royal Navy and the French fleet.
