We want you to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. That’s why we have rated all of our excursions with activity levels to help you assess this program’s physical expectations. Activity Level ratings indicate each excursion’s physical expectations. To make the best personal choice, please evaluate each excursion’s rating and your ability to meet the tour’s physical demands. Please note excursions on this program require you to: walk on cobblestones, unpaved paths or uneven surfaces; and get on/off motor coaches, boats and trains.
1–Mild: walk under 1 mile on mainly flat terrain; navigate under 50 stairs; stand under 1 hour
2–Moderate: walk 1-3 miles on flat/uneven terrain; navigate 50-100 stairs; stand 1-2 hours
3–Active: walk 2+ miles on flat/uneven terrain, including up and down inclines; navigate 100+ stairs; stand 3+ hours
Depending on the excursion, more leisurely alternatives may be available.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

CANCELLATION-Cancellations for any reason from date of booking to 76 days prior to trip departure will be subject to a $300 per person administrative fee. The withheld administrative fee may be applied to a future AHI Travel program that will operate in the current calendar year or year following cancellation. The credit will be applied to the final billing and may not be used as part of the initial deposit. It is non-transferable and is not valid toward the purchase of an AHI Cruises independent cruise. Cancellations from 75 to 60 days prior to departure will result in forfeiture of 25% of the entire cost of the trip per person; 59-30 days, 50% of the trip cost per person; cancellations from 29 days up to the time of departure will result in 100% forfeiture of the entire cost of the trip. TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE IS AVAILABLE. AN APPLICATION WILL BE SENT AFTER YOU RESERVE. All cancellations must be submitted in writing to AHI Travel. CANCELLATION OF TRIP OPTIONS-Purchases of optional excursions, trip extensions and additional hotel nights become fully non-refundable 45 days prior to departure. Air transportation and private transfer purchases are subject only to penalties assessed by the airlines and transfer suppliers.

  • day 1

    Depart gateway city

    Passengers depart for Munich, Germany. Please check your luggage from your gateway city to your arrival city. Your claim checks should have the following airport code: MUC.

  • day 2

    Munich, Germany | Oberstaufen

    Arrive at Munich Airport. Proceed through immigration to the baggage claim area and retrieve your luggage. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the Arrivals Hall, where an AHI Travel representative will meet you.

    Transfer to Lindner Parkhotel & Spa. Please note, if you arrive before check-in time, your room may not be immediately available.

    After settling into your hotel, join your Travel Director and other travelers for an orientation walk around Oberstaufen.

    Get to know your fellow travelers at a Welcome Reception and Dinner.

    Hindelang | Rettenberg

    Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel each morning.

    Enrichment: The Allgäu and the Alps.
    Stretching from the Danube to the Alps, the Allgäu region in Southern Germany is beloved by locals and vacationers alike. Learn what makes the Allgäu region so special during an enlightening morning discussion.

    Discovery: Traditions and Handicrafts in the Alps.
    Activity level: Moderate

    Witness the pride of local craftspeople as you chat with them about their handmade items inside their workshops and learn how they create them. Browse handmade items including dirndl and lederhosen, then continue to Hindelang and enjoy a bustling farmers’ cooperative and learn how area families participate in this community-oriented, small-town market. Later, at a nearby family farm, understand more about the region’s farming practices. Finish with a lunch of German fare at a long-established Rettenberg brewery and sample the beer with a toast of Prost!

    Appenzell | St. Gallen

    Discovery: Appenzell and St. Gallen.
    Activity level: Moderate

    This morning, cross the border to experience cheery Appenzell, an unmistakably Swiss village beloved for its rolling hills and rural customs including the ceremonial descent of the cattle in autumn. Appenzell is the headquarters for yodeling and is also known for its delicious pear bread, cheeses and chocolates. Take time to admire Appenzell’s lovely fresco-painted houses in the town’s car-free center.

    A rustic mountaintop hut sets the scene for today’s quintessential lunch of bubbling cheese fondue. Savor this decadent Swiss meal with fellow travelers as you feast your eyes on a perfectly paired side dish: stunning Appenzeller views.

    Make your way to the Swiss village of St. Gallen, where you’ll find a sanctuary for the soul. At the entrance of the Abbey Library, a sign in Greek translates to “soul pharmacy.” Your insider tour reveals 12 centuries of precious handwritten, lavishly illustrated manuscripts as well as coins, medals and fossils, surrounded by undulating balconies under gorgeous ceiling frescoes. Continue on to the light and airy Abbey cathedral, built around 1755 in late baroque style.

    Free Time: Relax and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon and dinner on your own.

    Linderhof Palace | Ettal Abbey

    Discovery: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Palace and Ettal Abbey.
    Activity level: Moderate

    Have your camera on hand as you witness Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig II’s spectacular castle perched high on a rugged hilltop against a mountain scenery. Continue to Linderhof Palace, also built by King Ludwig II, for an inside look at the palace’s opulent rooms and manicured gardens inspired by Versailles. Next, stroll the castle-like grounds of Ettal Abbey, a 14th-century Benedictine monastery considered a masterpiece of Bavarian architecture.

    Enjoy a Bavarian lunch en route with fellow travelers today.

    Free Time: Following the royal excursion, return to the Lindner Parkhotel and enjoy the evening in and around your chalet-style retreat.

    Friedrichshafen | Lake Constance | Lindau

    Enrichment: The History of Lake Constance.
    Also known as Bodensee, majestic Lake Constance is a glacier basin that forms part of the Rhine River confluence. Its beautiful, curving shoreline is a storied playground shared by three nations — Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This morning, learn about the inland sea’s important place in history.

    Discovery: Lake Constance.
    Activity level: Moderate

    Enjoy the mountain scenery as you make your way to Friedrichshafen, home of the fascinating Zeppelin Museum. Inside, learn about the airships which first took flight in 1900. Afterward, feel the sun and crisp air on your face as you cruise across the lake for lunch and a walking tour in cozy Lindau. See the storybook spires of Diebsturm, also known as Thieves Tower; the intricately painted Old Town Hall; and the stately baroque Haus zum Cavazzen in the Market Square.

    Enjoy lunch in picture-perfect Lindau Harbor under the watchful eye of the Bavarian lion statue and the medieval lighthouse, with the crystalline lake and stunning Alps as your dramatic backdrop.

    Free Time: Roam Lindau’s lovely little passageways or browse the pretty town’s unique shops before your return trip to your hotel.

    Upper Allgäu | Breitach Gorge

    The citizens of the Free State of Bavaria are proud of their land and culture, a way of life that includes its own dialect, cuisine, architecture and festivals. From Oktoberfest to an Alpine spirit, learn what makes Bavarians tick.

    Discovery: Panoramic Alps and Breitach Gorge.
    Activity level: Moderate

    Feel the soul-stirring magnetism of Alpine splendor today as you discover Bavaria’s upper Allgäu region on your scenic drive to Mount Nebelhorn. Ascend in a gondola to savor the magnificent views, then travel through the Walser valley into Austria to Breitach Gorge, one of central Europe’s deepest gorges. Contemplate the beauty of nature as you walk along narrow footpaths and bridges amid the rushing sounds of the Breitach River.

    Free Time: After an invigorating morning in nature, return to Oberstaufen for an independent lunch and an afternoon of leisure or independent exploration.

    Oberstaufen

    Free Time: Make the most of your last day in Bavaria. Relax in the wooden sauna, a ritual that Germans believe is vital to good health. Take a refreshing swim in the hotel pool, commune with nature during a leisurely stroll in a meadow or set out on an invigorating mountain hike. Sample a range of smooth, decadent chocolates or raise a frothy stein of beer with friends.

    Tonight, join your fellow travelers for a fun-filled Farewell Reception and Dinner rooted in Bavarian traditions.

    Depart for home

    After breakfast, bid farewell to Bavaria. AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for a group transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer depart for Munich Airport for your return flights home. Your Travel Director will provide the details.
