Unlike the dazzling fjords sprinkled throughout Europe, Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor was not carved by glaciers. Instead, the strikingly beautiful bay is a ria, or a submerged river valley that was created by rising sea levels. Today, you’ll discover the bay’s jaw-dropping hills, plummeting cliffs and emerald waters during a private cruise. Admire the scenery while sailing to Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island founded over 500 years ago. Along the way, learn about the island’s legend and tour its baroque-style church.
Continue to medieval Perast, a charming lakefront town with a storied seafaring history. The tiny village is showcase to 16 churches and many palaces, defensive towers and monuments, including the Bloody Tower, a fort that once served as a Turkish prison. Enjoy free time in Perast followed by a group lunch.

Cruise to Kotor and explore the UNESCO World Heritage listed old town that is encircled with over 2.5 miles of fortifications. Here, cobbled lanes give way to shaded squares, historic churches, restaurants and a stone clock tower. Built in 1602, the clock stands sentry above the Square of Arms.

After time at leisure, return to Tivat by motor coach.

Your evening is at leisure to make your own discoveries.

    Budva

    Enrichment: Independent Montenegro.
Today, a local expert discusses the political, economic and social forces that helped shape the republic of Montenegro after the country gained status as an independent nation in 2006.

    Discovery: Budva.
    Activity level: Moderate

There are more than 50 monasteries sprinkled throughout Montenegro and each offers significant historical and cultural treasures. Today, visit two of these monasteries — the medieval Serbian Orthodox Reževići Monastery and the thousand-year-old Praskvica Monastery. Located in an olive grove, the UNESCO-protected Monastery of Reževići is comprised of two churches. Enjoy the peaceful setting and learn how the monks lived before continuing to Praskvica Monastery. Believed to have been founded in 1050, the landmark features sleeping quarters, a former school, ancient manuscripts and interesting relics.
Continue to Budva, a coastal town enclosed within medieval citadel walls that is host to many historic monuments and pretty churches. During a guided walk, witness the Old Town’s narrow streets lined with charming shops and eateries.
