    Fred Plotkin

    Fred Plotkin is one of the world's most respected opera experts and author of Opera 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Opera. And Classical Music 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Classical Music. He was scholar in residence at the 2012 Verbier Festival. Fred has lectured, taught, consulted and held managerial or artistic roles at some of the top opera companies, including La Scala (as a Fulbright Scholar) and the Metropolitan Opera. He has appeared often on WFMT, NPR, the BBC and the national radio networks of Italy, France, Ireland, Finland and Canada.

    Tuesday, July 30: Welcome to the Swiss Alps

    Take in views of Lake Geneva as you are transported high into the
    alps of French-speaking Switzerland. Check into the cozy Hotel
    Montpelier and join your music-loving friends for a welcoming
    reception and dinner.

    Wednesday, July 31: The Remarkable Verbier Music Festival

    Start your Verbier adventure with a masterclass led by legendary pianist Andras Schiff followed by a traditional Swiss fondue lunch and a world class concert. T his evening we take our seats in the Salle des Combins for a performance by the Verbier Festival Orchestra with conductor Lahav Shani and pianist Denis Matsuev, performing Prokofiev’s War & Peace Overture, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no. 3 and Stravinsky’s Petrouchka.

    Thursday, August 1: Bach at the Verble, Music Festlval

    Immerse in the life and music of Johan Sebastian Bach with
    performances by some of the world’s top classical musicians and a
    lecture from Fred Plotkin, your expert study leader. Antoine Tamestit, viola, and Masaaki Suzuki, harpsichord, give a morning concert and Andras Schiff performs some of the Well-Tempered Clavier in the evening. Enjoy a walk through the town, pausing to take in the magnificent alpine scenery and the pop-up musical events throughout the town. Dinner as a group in local restaurant.

    Friday, August 2: Verbier Music Festival: Tchaikovsky and Cheese

    In addition to two outstanding concerts, you will have an exclusive lesson on the unique cheese traditions of this area as well as a light lunch and a glass of wine. In the morning is a concert by instrumentalists who studied at the Verbier Festival Academy. This evening attend an all-Tchaikovsky concert with star musicians Vadim Repin, violin; Mischa Maisky, viola; Denis Matsuev, piano.

    Saturday, August 3: Verbier Music Festival Grand Finale

    Your last day includes a farewell meal and two glorious concerts at Salle des Combins. In the afternoon enjoy a concert version of Mozart’s Die Zauberflote performed by the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra under the direction of Stanislav Kochanovsky with the young singers of the Verbier Festival Academy, all of whom will have trained throughout the 2019 festival. In the evening, Fabio Luisi conducts the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony no. 2 (“Resurrection”) with Golda Schultz and Ekaterina Gubanova, soloists.

    Sunday, August 4: Departures and Au Revoir

    Transfer back to Geneva airport for your flight home, with your head full of gorgeous melodies and unforgettable experiences from your total immersion in music and nature.
