This exploration of the magnificent landscapes, remote islands, ancient settlements and idyllic villages of Norway and northern Scotland is scheduled for the height of summer when sunlight extends into the evening hours and temperatures are mild. Much more than a cursory introduction, this varied and balanced itinerary combines the wonders of the natural world with the historical and cultural highlights of the area from Aberdeen to the Shetland Islands, then far up the Norwegian Coast above the Arctic Circle to Tromsø.

    Depart the U.S.

    Overnight flight to Aberdeen, Scotland.

  • day 2


    Arrive Aberdeen; embarkation and welcome evening on board.

  • day 3

    Fair Isle, Shetland Islands

    AM cruising with time for lectures; PM warm local welcome in Fair Isle, population ~60, w/Bird Observatory visit & scenic walk; cruise over lunch; call at island of Mousa to see Pictish tower built 2,000 years ago and tallest, best-preserved Iron Age broch (tower) in Britain.

    Lerwick, Shetland Islands

    AM visit archaeological site of Jarlshof, with layers of settlements from Neolithic to Bronze Age, Iron Age, and medieval times; PM exploring Lerwick with free time and a chance to visit to excellent Shetland Museum.

  • day 5

    Stavanger, Norway

    Morning cruising; afternoon & evening in Stavanger with Norwegian Petroleum Museum & historic Old Town; option for independent dinner ashore.

  • day 6

    Rosendal & Hardangerfjord

    Full-day excursion in the Hardangerfjord area, crossing to the north side of the fjord for live demonstrations of Norway’s traditional shipbuilding techniques at the Hardanger Maritime Center and a picnic lunch at an idyllic fjordside fruit orchard, as well as panoramic drives with waterfalls and views of the Folgefonna Glacier.

    Full day in Bergen, with guided tour of historic Bryggen wharf and fish market; time at leisure; mid-afternoon Troldhaugen with private Grieg concert; option for independent dinner ashore.

  • day 8

    Flåm & Naeroyfjord

    AM Flam Railway, lunch at Stalheim Hotel and Viking experience in Gudvangen; early evening cruising along the UNESCO World Heritage Naeroyfjord back out to the Sognefjorden.

  • day 9

    Runde & Ålesund

    AM cruise by bird cliffs at Runde, nesting site of over 240 species including puffins followed by visit to beautiful Ålesund, with Art Nouveau buildings and islands stretching out into the ocean; PM cruising.
