Tonight, we begin cruising the Beagle Channel.

    The Beagle Channel.

One of three navigable routes linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the southern tip of the South American continent, this strait separates the main island of Tierra del Fuego from other small islands. “Discovered”; in 1831 by British naval officer Robert FitzRoy, the channel was named after his research vessel, the HMS Beagle.

  • day 5 & 6

    Cruising the Drake Passage

Following a satisfying breakfast, attend a mandatory Zodiac safety briefing led by your expedition leader as we begin the 48-hour journey to cross the Drake Passage.

Drake Passage. Named for the renowned explorer, Sir Frances Drake, this deep waterway connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands, north of the Antarctic Peninsula. The temperature drops noticeably as you reach the Antarctic Convergence, where you may see breaching humpback whales; seabirds feeding on plankton and krill; black-browed albatross; brown skua; cormorants; Sooty Shearwater; South American terns; and even hourglass dolphins from the top deck. Your expedition team will prepare you for your first landing in Antarctica. During the evening, enjoy the lingering golden light of the austral summer or attend a lecture on board the ship.

Attend a Captain’s Welcome Reception and dinner on board.

Choose your favorite restaurant for dinner on board this evening.

  • day 7

    Neumayer Channel/Port Lockroy

Port Lockroy and Jougla Point. Built as a British intelligence port during World War II, then converted into a whaling station and scientific base, Port Lockroy is a living museum known as “Base A.”; One of several small bases established on the Antarctic Peninsula to report on enemy activities and provide weather reports, Port Lockroy was built on Goudier Island in January 1944. The team was led by Lt. Commander James Marr, who first visited Antarctica as a young Boy Scout under the leadership of Sir Ernest Shackleton. Today, you may observe the daily activities of past researchers here and mail a postcard with an Antarctica postmark from the official British Post Office.

Cruise by Jougla Point just across the way on Wiencke Island, where you will have a rare opportunity to view the skeletal remains of an adult blue whale and see populous colonies of gentoo penguins and birdlife, particularly blue-eyed shags and kelp gulls that inhabit the region.

Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening.

  • day 8

    Petermann Island/ Lemaire Channel

Petermann Island. Today we call at the island where French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot wintered on his Pourquoi Pas vessel in 1909. Named for the German geographer August Petermann, the island is famous for its bird population. In addition to a breeding colony of about 3,000 pairs of gentoo penguins, it’s also home to Adelie penguins, Wilson’s storm petrels, south polar skuas and Blue-eyed shags.

Return to the ship for lunch on the deck, weather permitting, as we cruise through Lemaire Channel. Flanked by towering glacial cliffs between the Antarctic Peninsula and Booth Island, seven miles of mountains and interweaving patterns of floes brim with wildlife on this remarkable passage. Attend a lecture on board the ship this evening with dinner at your choice of restaurants.

  • day 9

    Neko Harbor/ Paradise Harbor

Neko Harbor. Listen for the low rumbling of Rudolf Glacier as it calves slabs of ice into Neko Harbor. Located along the northern shore of beautiful Andvord Bay, this harbor was first sighted and charted during the 1887 to 1899 Belgian Antarctic expedition. The site is named for the floating factory whale ship, Neko. We make a continental landing here to explore the harbor and its panoramic scenery. Surrounded by soaring glaciers and snow-covered mountains, this is one of the most dramatic sights on your expedition. If we’re lucky, we might also see gentoo penguins, Weddell seals, fur seals and other Antarctic wildlife.

Return to the ship to enjoy lunch on board and attend a briefing by the expedition naturalists as we cruise through Paradise Harbor — one of the most pristine spots in Antarctica. Behold crystal cliffs of ice descending from sky-bent mountains into the iceberg‑laden waters. Named by 19th‑century whalers who sought shelter in its coves, it is an ideal sanctuary for marine wildlife including humpback whales, crabeater seals and Cape petrels.

  • day 10

    Deception Island/Neptunes Bellows/ Pendulum Cove/Half Moon Island

Deception Island. The top of a much larger volcano that is mostly submerged, Deception Island was sought out by whalers nearly two centuries ago. Its Port Foster is a breached caldera that was formed when the center of the volcano collapsed below sea level after a huge prehistoric explosive eruption. Eruptions have continued at irregular intervals, from the first officially recorded one in 1842 to an eruption in 1969 that destroyed both Chilean and British bases. No permanent residents live on the island, but both Argentina and Spain have summer stations here. We arrive at the entrance of the island’s crater for a morning excursion before returning to the ship for lunch.

This afternoon, we embark on a second excursion to visit the Argentine Cámara Station on Half Moon Island.

Half Moon Island. This crescent-shaped island is known for its volcanic rock formations and tranquil lagoons. It houses an important research base monitored by Argentine biologists studying regional wildlife. Our visit includes a visit to the station to see how they live and work. We will also travel to another part of the island for opportunities to walk among a colony of chinstrap and gentoo penguins and observe other extraordinary birds.

Share your day’s adventures over dinner.

  • day 11

    Cruising the e Drake Passage

Cruise below the 60th parallel south to the outer shores of the Antarctic Peninsula – Earth’s last frontier. Behold these sights and more with opportunities to enjoy onboard lectures and other amenities on this day at sea.

  • day 12

    Cruising the Drake Passage

Travel back across the Antarctic Convergence to cross the Drake Passage. As we cruise these previously uncharted waters, our ship rounds Cape Horn — the graveyard of hundreds of ships that once battled the westerly winds. From here, the ship will go east then turn north toward the Beagle Channel back to Ushuaia.

Farewell Reception: Attend the Captain’s Farewell Reception this evening and share your favorite stories from the expedition with fellow passengers.

Your final day on this extraordinary expedition ends with a farewell gala dinner.
