Upon arrival at Manchester Airport, a private transfer will take you to our hotel, Cottons Hotel & Spa, Knutsford. In the evening, join the group for a welcome drink and canapés, followed by dinner.

Quarry Bank Mill

We enjoy a guided tour of the Mill at Quarry Bank Mill, where the sights, sounds and stories of the Industrial Revolution come alive. Wander through the impressive cotton mill and experience the powerful machinery in action, filling the air with the authentic rhythm of a working 18th-century factory. Children as young as nine years old were once employed at Quarry Bank Mill, sent here as indentured labour from the poor workhouses, and today we’ll visit the fascinating Apprentice House, where they lived from the 1790s until the practice was ended in 1847. There’s also the chance to stroll along woodland paths beside the River Bollin and explore beautiful gardens.

Brontë Parsonage Museum & Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

We make our way to the charming hilltop village of Haworth, famously associated with the Brontë sisters, who spent much of their lives here. Their former residence is now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, carefully preserved and home to the world’s most significant collection of Brontë artifacts. Exploring the atmospheric rooms is a truly captivating experience, offering a glimpse into the very spaces where literary masterpieces such as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall were brought to life. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop to pick up a book and receive the special parsonage stamp.

Our journey continues with a scenic ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, a heritage line stretching four miles between the award-winning Bolton Abbey station and the

historic Embsay station, dating back to 1888. Most services are hauled by beautifully restored steam locomotives, including one dating to 1908. Sit back and soak up the nostalgia of a bygone era as you travel through the stunning Yorkshire Dales. Later, we enjoy a delightful afternoon tea at a nearby venue. 

Durham Cathedral & 'The Angel of the North'

We take a guided tour of the magnificent Durham Cathedral and uncover its rich history before enjoying free time to explore the Cathedral Museum at your own pace. Afterward, take the opportunity to discover Durham itself, find a spot for lunch or wander through the historic university (partly housed within Durham Castle), or take a relaxing stroll down to the river. Later, sit back as we journey to Alnwick, with a brief photo stop at the iconic Angel of the North along the way.

Alnwick Castle & Cragside

Still the ancestral home of the Duke of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle remains one of England’s largest inhabited castles and is instantly recognisable from appearances in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films. Within its medieval walls lie magnificent State Rooms, showcasing an impressive collection of furniture, ceramics and artworks amassed by the Percy family over centuries, all brought to life during our guided tour. There’s also time to wander through the beautiful gardens, alive with vibrant colors and fragrant blooms.

From here, we take a picturesque drive to Cragside, dramatically set into the hillside above the sparkling waters of Debdon Burn. Once the residence of pioneering Victorian inventor Lord Armstrong, this remarkable house brims with ingenious gadgets and innovations of its time. Notably, it was the first home in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity, and today, a restored Archimedes’ Screw once again generates enough energy to illuminate the house.

Holy Island & Lindisfarne Priory & Castle

Discover the remarkable Holy Island of Lindisfarne, with visits to both the atmospheric ruins of Lindisfarne Priory and the striking castle that stands proudly above the shoreline. Reached by a narrow causeway that is dramatically cut off by the tide twice each day, the island provides a truly unique sense of arrival, timed carefully with the rhythm of nature. Once the center of early Christian learning and the home of the famous Lindisfarne Gospels, this sacred site played a vital role in Britain’s religious history. Today, its windswept beauty and powerful past make it an unforgettable experience.

Bamburgh Castle & Seaton Delaval Hall

Perched on a dramatic rocky outcrop overlooking the sweeping Northumberland coastline, Bamburgh Castle is one of England’s most striking historic fortresses. Still privately owned, it has stood guard over the North Sea for more than 1,400 years, evolving from an ancient Anglo-Saxon stronghold into the impressive structure seen today. We enjoy an introductory talk before free time to explore its vast halls, grand interiors and fascinating collections of artifacts, from weapons and armor to treasures that reflect the region’s rich heritage. Surrounded by windswept dunes and rugged scenery, Bamburgh Castle’s breathtaking natural beauty makes it one of the most memorable landmarks in the North East.

Next is Seaton Delaval Hall, a striking baroque masterpiece of spectacular grandeur with a dramatic past. Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in the early 18th century, the hall was built for the flamboyant Delaval family, whose lively and often mischievous reputation became the stuff of local legend. On our tour, we discover exhibitions that bring the Delavals’ story to life and wander through the surrounding gardens, which have been beautifully restored to reflect their original design.

Vindolanda Fort & Museum, Hadrian's Wall & Hexham Abbey

We visit Vindolanda, one of Britain’s most fascinating Roman archaeological sites, where we enjoy a guided tour. Uncover the stories of the soldiers and families who once lived along Hadrian’s Wall before taking time to explore the excellent museum, home to an extraordinary collection of Roman artifacts uncovered on-site, at your own pace. Our journey continues with a stop at The Sill National Landscape Discovery Center, where you can relax and purchase lunch while taking in views of the surrounding countryside.

Then, take the chance to capture a memorable photo at Hadrian’s Wall itself, an enduring symbol of Roman Britain and take in the historic beauty of Hexham Abbey, one of the finest examples of early English architecture in the North East, with its origins dating back over 1,300 years. Raby Castle

We head to Raby Castle, where a private guided tour awaits. The estate’s origins date back to the early 11th century, when it was held by King Cnut, though it was the powerful Neville family who later shaped the impressive 14th-century fortress that stands today. Its formidable exterior, complete with towers, turrets and battlements, gives way to richly decorated interiors that span centuries, from medieval through to Regency and Victorian styles. These elegant rooms provide the perfect setting for an outstanding collection of art, which we have the chance to browse before enjoying a picnic lunch.

Blackwell House, Grasmere, Dove Cottage & The Wordsworth Museum

We embark on a guided tour of Blackwell, one of Britain’s most celebrated Arts and Crafts houses. This Grade I-listed masterpiece, designed by M.H. Baillie Scott, boasts sweeping

views across Windermere and the Coniston Fells. Inside, it preserves an array of original decorative features, from striking plasterwork to exquisite stained glass, alongside furniture and objects by leading designers of the movement.

Next, we visit the home of a British literary icon, William Wordsworth. The famous poet fell in love with Dove Cottage and Grasmere while on a walking tour of the Lake District in 1799 and went on to live here with his sister Dorothy. Little changed since Wordsworth’s tenure, the story of the house and family is vividly told, with many of Wordsworth’s furniture and possessions on display, along with original letters, journals, manuscripts and artworks. We enjoy a special Stories of Wordsworth tour with an expert curator, where we have the opportunity to see items from the collection which are not ordinarily viewed by the public, including first edition books, Dorothy’s Grasmere journal and letters written by the family.

Steam Yacht Gondola, Brantwood & Muncaster Castle

We take a memorable trip aboard the Steam Yacht Gondola across Coniston Water. The original Gondola was first launched in 1859 and this Victorian steam-powered yacht has now been completely rebuilt by the National Trust. With its backdrop of spectacular scenery, Coniston Water is the Lake District’s third largest lake and was the inspiration for Arthur Ransome’s enchanting childhood adventure book, Swallows and Amazons. We then stop at Brantwood House, the former home of John Ruskin. Uncover many fine paintings, beautiful furniture and Ruskin’s personal treasures, as we delve into the world of the famous Victorian writer, artist and social reformer.

We then head to Muncaster Castle for a private after-hours tour. Home to the Pennington family since 1208, the castle has a colorful history and an extensive collection of 16th and 17th-century furniture, paintings and family portraits across rooms such as the renowned library and atmospheric Tapestry Room. The castle is believed to be haunted by several ghosts, including the infamous court jester, Thomas Skelton, better known as Tom Fool! Take a look at his portrait in the castle before enjoying the lovely gardens, home to one of Europe’s largest collections of rhododendrons. This evening, we enjoy a special dinner here within the castle walls. 

Lake Windermere Cruise, Holker Hall & Levens Hall

We begin the day with a relaxing cruise on Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake. After stepping on board in the picturesque town of Bowness-on-Windermere, sit back and soak up the spectacular views of dramatic mountains, peaceful bays and tree-clad islands.

Another highlight is the impressive Holker Hall and Gardens, the welcoming home of Lord and Lady Cavendish, where we enjoy a private guided tour. This beautiful estate reflects a period of grandeur and prosperity, with exceptional craftsmanship evident throughout its interiors. Constructed from red sandstone and once hailed as ‘the finest Elizabethan Gothic house in northern England’, it showcases an array of antique furniture and artwork. Highlights include portraits of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, as well as the bedroom used by Queen Mary during her visit in 1937. 

We also head to Levens Hall, an elegant Elizabethan house built around a 13th-century pele tower. Here, we learn about the Bagot family, who have called the estate home for more than 400 years. Inside, we admire an impressive collection of treasures, including fine paintings by Rubens, Lely and Cuyp, as well as the oldest example of English patchwork. After our included lunch, there’s free time to explore the award-winning gardens, where the world’s oldest topiary features over 100 magnificent shapes such as pyramids, columns and striking forms reminiscent of giant chess pieces.
