Lisbon, Portugal | Vila Viçosa
Arrive at Lisbon Airport, where a Travel representative will meet you for the transfer to the Alentejo Marmoris Hotel & Spa in Vila Viçosa. After you’ve settled into your room, meet and mingle with your fellow travelers at tonight’s Welcome Reception and Dinner at the hotel.

Vila Viçosa | Borba
Portugal’s acclaimed white marble has been extracted from this region since Roman times. Take in the gleaming splendor of Vila Viçosa and Borba, two of the Alentejo’s marble towns, where the local marble adorns façades, fountains, benches and doorways. Enjoy guided walks in each town, and then savor some of Portugal’s outstanding wines and lunch at a lovely winery. On your return to Vila Viçosa, tour the majestic, marble-clad Ducal Palace. Finish the day with an enlightening talk about the Alentejo’s historical significance.

Évora
In Évora, the Alentejo’s capital city, admire Roman ruins, Moorish-influenced architecture, handsome palaces and noble houses, and whitewashed homes decorated with azulejos, traditional ceramic tiles. Visit one of its most unusual monuments, the 16th-century Chapel of Bones, built by Franciscan monks. Afterward, Chef Sofia cordially welcomes you to her charming farmhouse near the old town for a hands-on cooking session covering authentic ingredients, techniques and cultural insights. Then it’s time to dig into your delectable creations!

Monsaraz | São Pedro do Corval
Relish the medieval ambience of Monsaraz, a picturesque, hilltop village, and expansive views over the rolling countryside dotted with olive and cork trees. Travel next to Herdade do Esporão to taste delicious olive oils and enjoy a relaxing lunch with wine on this large estate. Stop later in São Pedro do Corval, known for its traditional pottery workshops. Visit a pottery studio to watch the artisans craft colorful pieces.

Mérida, Spain | Olivenza | Vila Viçosa, Portugal
Cross the border into Spain this morning and visit Mérida, home to superb ruins that reflect the glory of the Roman Empire. Appreciate the classical lines of the elegant theater and stand in the amphitheater where gladiators battled. After lunch at the Parador de Mérida, stroll in Olivenza, one of Spain’s prettiest villages, which was part of Portugal until 1801. See the blend of cultures revealed along its lanes and view interesting historical artifacts at a museum.

Estremoz | Elvas
This morning, join an expert for a discussion about fado, the renowned Portuguese music. Then head off to the bustling town market and delight in being part of the local scene as you and your guide chat with the vendors and sample freshly made cheeses, sausages, breads, pastries and more. Later, take a guided walk in Elvas, a fortified border town that once protected a key crossing between Madrid and Lisbon. Learn about its strategic importance and meander in inviting squares like the strikingly tiled Praça da República.

Lisbon
Check out of the hotel and travel to Lisbon. On a scenic tour/guided walk, revel in the city’s vibrant character and stunning architecture. Go inside the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery to see the exquisite church and cloisters ornamented in the Manueline style, and marvel at the imposing Tower of Belém over the Tagus River. At the Monument to the Discoveries, delve into Portugal’s famous navigators and the golden era of exploration. In the afternoon, check in to the Dom Pedro Lisboa. Tonight, raise a toast with your fellow travelers at a Farewell Reception. After the reception in the hotel, continue to a cozy restaurant for a Farewell Dinner, where you’ll enjoy regional favorites alongside a soul-stirring performance of traditional fado music.

After breakfast, depart for the airport in Lisbon and head home.
